Agellis LadleSafe Hot Spot Detection – System Overview

Ladle breakouts in steelmaking pose significant risks, including equipment damage, production loss, and potential safety hazards. Although production routines can reduce these risks, breakouts are inevitable with liquid steel transportation. The LadleSafe system is designed to mitigate these dangerous and costly events, offering a rapid return on investment. A single medium-severity ladle breakout can cover the cost of the system, and by extending the ladle refractory lifespan by just 1–2%, the system pays for itself within a year.

Why Choose LadleSafe?

Are you worried about the risks of metal breakouts? Do you feel that your ladle refractories could endure a few more heats, but prioritize safety? Would you gain confidence in extending the ladle refractory lifespan if a system scanned each ladle before casting?

If you answered “yes” to any of these concerns, LadleSafe is the solution you need. Utilizing infrared camera technology and data analysis, LadleSafe assesses the thermal condition of your ladles to enhance safety and efficiency.

How It Functions

The crane operator places the ladle within the measurement zone, ensuring that thermal cameras capture all angles of the ladle. This zone is typically positioned at the end of the metal processing phase, near the casting area.

If these conditions apply, LadleSafe is your ideal solution. Utilizing infrared camera technology, LadleSafe analyzes data to assess the thermal condition of your ladles.

Once the ladle is positioned, the crane operator initiates the measurement via a touchscreen monitor. The system scans the ladle ID, performs necessary checks, and begins collecting thermal data for analysis. Typically, the thermal status results are provided to the crane operator within seconds, summarized in a recommendation to help identify potentially dangerous ladles. Based on these results, the operator determines whether the ladle is safe for continued use.

Additionally, the operator can review detailed sections of the ladle analysis and examine a graphical display of previous measurement results for the current ladle.

Key Features

  • Early Warning for Hot Spots – Provides advanced notice of potentially hazardous ladle hot spots. LadleSafe identifies these hot spots before they become visible (red hot), enabling proactive measures to prevent critical issues.
  • Temperature Trend Analysis – Tracks and displays the temperature changes of the ladle steel structure over time. This data assists refractory maintenance teams in managing and maintaining the ladle.
  • Extended Refractory Lifespan – Helps maximize the lifespan of ladle refractories. By measuring the ladle steel structure’s temperature in use, LadleSafe can indicate the refractory’s condition, allowing continued use as long as temperatures remain within safe limits.
  • Data Analysis – Includes a comprehensive database of measurement results for detailed evaluation. This facilitates effective ladle fleet management, prevents excessive thermal loads, and extends refractory life. The database also helps identify production practices that may harm the ladle refractory.
