The ITEMA Infrared Ladle Hot Spot Detection System (LHSD) is designed to allow the steelmaker to locate hot spots on their ladles in conjunction with the normal preventative maintenance.  The system uses a analysis of the ladle surface temperature distribution to determine possible upcoming failures of the refractory ladle lining.  the net result is that the steelmaker can avoid a possible break-out of liquid metal along with the associated consequences such as damage to the steelmaking facility, high cost of repairs, loss of production and compromising of employee safety.  Consequently the lifetime of the ladle refractory can be optimized resulting in a substantial savings.

The system consists of four or five cameras, depending on customer requirements.  The cameras are positioned in such a manner that when the ladle is in the measurement position, all surfaces of the ladle can be viewed.   The system actually detects when the ladle is at this position and the analysis begins automatically.

If any suspect areas are detected, based on predefined limits, an immediate alarm will sound and digital images are stored for later review and analysis.
