The EMLI BOF and EAF Detection System
The EMLI Ladle Slag Detection system ensures accurate identification of slag during steel production, reducing contamination and improving metal purity. This reliable system integrates seamlessly with ladle operations, enhancing overall product quality. Precise slag detection is assured with this technology.
EMLI System Overview
The EMLI™ (Electro Magnetic Level Indication) system employs advanced technology to measure and detect liquid metal levels accurately. The system’s core components include a MANAGEMENT UNIT, a CONTROL UNIT, and a PREAMPLIFIER UNIT. A single MANAGEMENT UNIT can oversee up to eight CONTROL UNITS in setups with multiple systems.
The MANAGEMENT UNIT is responsible for system monitoring, data logging, and setup, with remote access capabilities through an Internet connection if enabled.
The CONTROL UNIT is the system’s central component, generating the transmitter signal and processing the measurement data.
The PREAMPLIFIER UNIT amplifies the measurement signal before sending it to the CONTROL UNIT.
EMLI-SIL Ladle Slag Detection System
The EMLI III Ladle slag detection system utilizes advanced electronics and specially designed sensors to identify slag presence in the ladle’s well-block area.
The sensors’ unique design and strategic placement enable the EMLI system to produce a dependable and precise slag alarm well before a human operator can detect it.
This technology allows users to optimize yield while significantly reducing slag carryover.
Principle of Operation
The EMLI Ladle slag detection system employs two sensor coils on opposite sides of the well block at the bottom of the ladle. One coil is a transmitter, while the other is a receiver.
The transmitter is energized with a regulated AC current, generating an electromagnetic field that the receiver detects.
When the well block is empty, the signal transfer is at its peak, and the receiver detects a strong signal. As tapping begins and the well block becomes fully filled with steel, the signal is heavily shielded, resulting in a minimal signal being detected by the receiver.
Toward the end of tapping, slag starts to mix into the stream and enters the well block. Since slag doesn’t block electromagnetic signals, the receiver’s signal rises to its maximum level. The received signal is directly proportional to the slag in the well block.
The system triggers a slag alarm when the received signal reaches a predetermined threshold.
Exceptional System Advantages
The EMLI Ladle Slag Detection System provides precise and dependable detection of slag formation during the draining process of a continuous caster ladle. This system offers several advantages for modern steelmakers:
- The innovative design and strategic placement of the EMLI sensor coils enable early slag detection, offering a significant edge over competing technologies.
- The slag alarm settings can be customized according to the specific type of steel being produced.
- The sensor coils are positioned so that they can be easily accessed from the exterior of the ladle without disturbing the refractory lining.
- An optional RECO feature allows for the identification and tracking of each ladle when connected to the system.
