The WADECO Micro-Gunn and Micro-Reflex Hot Metal Edge Detectors are advanced microwave devices for various position detection tasks. Despite the “hot metal” label, these instruments are versatile and can detect any object interrupting or reflecting the microwave beam. The “hot metal” term is used because these devices are built to function in extreme environments, including those with heat, cold, steam, flames, or dust. They are suitable for applications where lasers, ultrasonic systems, or other microwave technologies may fail, such as in municipal, industrial, and nuclear waste disposal facilities, as well as fusion furnaces and reactors.
Overview
The MWS-ST/SR-2WG Micro-Gunn is an advanced Hot Metal Detector designed to replace traditional infrared detectors, laser/optical barriers, and gamma-ray sensors for product tracking in steel mills. Utilizing microwaves that are resistant to dense vapor, dust, and extreme temperatures, it effectively tracks slabs, strips, and coils in both hot and cold rolling mills. The system features antennas that operate in high-temperature zones, while controllers are positioned in cooler environments, ensuring reliable performance. The detection signal is triggered when the product interrupts the microwave beam between the antennas. Contact MPE-US to request a trial of the unit.

Micro-Gunn and Micro-Reflex
- WADECO Micro-Gunn
The Micro-Gunn, developed by WADECO, utilizes patented microwave technology. This edge detection system includes a transmitter and receiver unit linked to their antennas through a waveguide. The wide range of possible waveguide configurations allows the versatile Micro-Gunn to be customized for nearly any application. The transmitter and receiver are positioned on opposite sides of the target, and the microwave beam is interrupted when the target passes between them. - WADECO Micro-Reflex
The WADECO Micro-Reflex shares the same core electronics as the Micro-Gunn but in a different setup. While the Micro-Gunn detects objects by interrupting the microwave beam, the Micro-Reflex detects a reflected signal from the target. This makes the Micro-Reflex ideal for situations where it is challenging or impossible to place equipment on both sides of the detected object. - System Configurations
